Galaxy Survive a Red Card.
The 2026/27 Season Is Alive.

A first Matchday of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season defined by drama on every pitch — and heartbreak off it. Mamelodi Sundowns' opening fixture against Marumo Gallants was postponed following the passing of midfielder Jayden Adams. On the pitch, both Soweto giants won, newly promoted sides tasted the reality of top-flight opposition, and the Free State delivered the most dramatic match of the weekend.

Orlando Pirates 2–0 Milford FC

Oswin Appollis broke the deadlock on 24 minutes with a precise free-kick curled to the bottom right corner — a set-piece taken with the composure of someone who has done this at this level before. Milford's goalkeeper Siphamandla Hleza was well beaten. The second came on 85 minutes: Lebone Seema burst forward on a fast break and squared for Tshepang Moremi, who finished low into the centre of the goal.

Milford were far from without threat. Khanyisani Radebe — whose 90+6 playoff winner against Magesi earned Milford promotion — forced Sipho Chaine into a sharp save from long range. Cebolenkosi Mthethwa also tested Chaine in the 20th minute. Milford's shape and fight were evident. Patrick Maswanganyi picked up a yellow card on 28 minutes and eventually came off injured in the 75th, replaced by Simphiwe Masilela. Despite the 2-0 scoreline, this was a competitive opening-day performance from a newly promoted side. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will know his side are not yet clicking fluently — but three points on Matchday 1 is all that matters.

Kruger United 1–3 Kaizer Chiefs

A debut in Mpumalanga — and Kaizer Chiefs arrived with the Amakhosi faithful who follow the gold-and-black everywhere. Fernando da Cruz watched from the dugout as his side got off to the perfect start. Flávio Silva gave Chiefs the lead inside 7 minutes, finishing from the centre of the box after a Mfundo Vilakazi assist. Kruger United showed real character: Khetukuthula Ndlovu levelled in first-half injury time with a clinical left-footed finish to the bottom left corner, making it 1-1 at the break.

The second half belonged entirely to substitute Wandile Duba. Introduced at half-time — after Flávio Silva came off with an injury — Duba needed just 11 minutes to score twice. His first on 56 minutes was a poacher's finish from close range to the bottom right. His second on 66 came from a Lebohang Maboe through ball, dispatched to the centre of the goal. Two goals from the bench in ten minutes is not form — that is a statement. Kruger's Ndlovu picked up a yellow card late on, ruling him out of Matchday 2. Abram Mongoya's side showed fight throughout, but the gulf in class told by the final whistle.

Sekhukhune United 1–0 Durban City

The most personally charged match of the opening weekend delivered exactly what the occasion demanded: tight, physical, disciplined. Cedric Kaze versus Khalil Ben Youssef — former Kaizer Chiefs co-coaches, now rivals in the dugout. Bright Ndlovu settled it in the 27th minute with a left-footed strike from the left side of the box, assisted by Lehlogonolo Mojela, to the bottom right corner. A composed, well-taken goal that proved the only difference.

Durban City were far from passive. Gastón Sirino came on at half-time and immediately added creativity, while substitute Tashreeq Morris led the line with energy after entering on 68 minutes. Tylo Sanger came closest to an equaliser — his header in the 59th minute tested Sekhukhune keeper Melusi Buthelezi in the top left corner. The second half saw wave after wave of Durban City pressure. Ndlovu himself received a yellow on 64 minutes for a separate incident. Ultimately, Ben Youssef's side couldn’t find the breakthrough despite creating multiple chances. Defeat in a first Premiership match as head coach is not a crisis — but the Confederation Cup and Matchday 2 cannot come soon enough.

Stellenbosch FC 0–1 AmaZulu FC

The first half was goalless but not without incident — Athini Maqokola tested Stellenbosch keeper Sage Stephens twice, and Stellenbosch’s Avuzwa Mbembe went close with a right-footed effort in the 42nd minute. The game turned on 56 minutes when Stellenbosch centre-back Mosa Lebusa conceded a penalty for a foul on Maqokola in the box, picking up a yellow card in the process. Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya stepped up and converted to the bottom left corner. Gavin Hunt’s side pushed hard in the closing stages — Sinoxolo Kwayiba and substitute Keanan Johannessen both went close in the 90th minute — but Usuthu held on. A home defeat on opening day confirms the scale of the rebuild ahead.

Golden Arrows 0–0 Chippa United

A match with plenty of effort but precious few clear sights of goal. The closest anyone came was Philani Khumalo rattling the crossbar for Golden Arrows in the 54th minute — the bar the only thing separating Abafana Bes’thende from a winning start. Chippa’s Goodman Mosele, returning from his loan spell, was busy in midfield but unable to carve out a decisive chance. Arrows had three saves from Stanley Nwabali across the second half. A goalless draw in what both sides will view as a dropped opportunity — but a point apiece to open the season is not without value.

Richards Bay 0–1 Polokwane City

Ndamulelo Maphangule gave Rise and Shine the perfect start on 18 minutes — a close-range header from a Giovanni Philander cross after a corner. Richards Bay pressed hard for a leveller through Thulani Gumede, who twice tested keeper Lindokuhle Mathebula in the second half. But on 55 minutes, Banele Mnguni hit the post, and moments later Tidimalo Molokwane broke away to finish clinically to the bottom left corner — 0-2. Simphiwe Mcineka pulled one back with a header in the 69th minute to make it 1-2, and Richards Bay created a series of corners in the final minutes — six in total in the second half — but Bayano Moloto’s side held firm. Ronnie Gabriel’s Richards Bay face an immediate response required.

Siwelele FC 2–2 TS Galaxy FC

The most dramatic match of the opening weekend, and it was played in Bloemfontein. Sphesihle Jeza opened the scoring in the 29th minute for Siwelele in opportunistic fashion — a charged-down goalkeeper clearance that ended up in the net. Victor Letsoalo levelled from the penalty spot on 51 minutes for TS Galaxy, awarded for a handball by Shadrack Kobedi. Vincent Pule restored Siwelele's lead four minutes later with a clinical finish from a Thabiso Sesane pass. Veluyeke Zulu headed home at the back post in the 71st minute to make it 2-2 for the Rockets.

Then came the drama. Veluyeke Zulu’s equaliser came after Galaxy struck the woodwork just moments earlier through Christian Saile. In the third minute of injury time, Sipho Maseti was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside his area — forcing substitute goalkeeper Ira Tapé to come on in the 90+5 with ten men remaining on the pitch. Siwelele then created two more chances to win it in stoppage time, including a Jordan Marks shot saved by Tapé and a final Jeza effort in the 90+7 that went wide. A point apiece — but Galaxy head into Matchday 2 facing Sundowns with a one-match suspension to navigate.

Key watch points for Matchday 2: Sundowns finally get their season under way at Mbombela — a hostile environment but one they will be expected to handle, even as a side still absorbing the grief of losing Jayden Adams. TS Galaxy host them with a goalkeeper suspended after the Maseti red card, meaning a reshuffle at the back before the biggest match of their early season. Polokwane, riding the momentum of a Matchday 1 win, host a Stellenbosch side desperate to bounce back immediately. And Milford FC face Siwelele at Richards Bay Stadium — the fixture listed as a home match for Milford — in what will be a crucial early-season battle between two sides who will both be looking over their shoulders at the bottom of the table before the campaign is done.
