The third matchday of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season delivered the weekend's most complete individual performance, the most unlikely team result, and a renewed statement of intent from Orlando Pirates. Quwan Plaatjies scored a hat-trick inside 54 minutes at Athlone. Milford FC defied all logic to beat Kruger United with ten men. And Pirates went to Gqeberha and made it look straightforward.

Stellenbosch FC 3–1 Marumo Gallants

Quwan Plaatjies delivered the individual performance of Matchday 3 — and arguably of the season so far. Three goals in 54 minutes, a 9.7 match rating, and a performance that completely dismantled a Marumo Gallants side already hampered by the suspension of Thendo Mukumela (red card at MD2). Plaatjies opened on 13 minutes with a right-footed strike assisted by Tlakusani Mthethwa. The second on 28 minutes came via a Raoul Daniels cross, headed home. The third on 54 was almost identical: another Daniels delivery, another Plaatjies header. Three goals, two methods, one unstoppable player.

Plaatjies was then substituted off injured in the 65th minute — replaced by Qobolwakhe Sibande — and Stellenbosch managed the game comfortably through to the 81st minute, when Thapelo Dhludhlu pulled one back for Gallants with a right-footed effort to the top right corner. A consolation at best. For Gavin Hunt, a first league win of the season and the most emphatic display of his early tenure at the Cape Winelands club. For Gallants, the absence of Mukumela was felt throughout — they created little and defended poorly in the wide areas.

Kaizer Chiefs 1–1 Mamelodi Sundowns

The biggest match of the weekend and the most tactically absorbing. Chiefs had 33% possession and four shots — three on target — against Sundowns' 67% and 10. The xG (0.35 to 0.47) tells you how thin the margins were. But football is not decided by statistics alone, and on the day, Chiefs were the more efficient side until Sundowns' superior quality told in the second half.

Langelihle Phili, introduced as a substitute, scored the opening goal on 63 minutes — a right-footed finish from the centre of the box, assisted by Sibongiseni Mthethwa. Phili was immediately booked for excessive celebration. Siyanda Ndlovu was on the pitch for Sundowns in the second half, a sight that will not have been lost on anyone given the summer's transfer controversy. Sundowns levelled on 75 minutes when substitute Cassius Mailula headed home a Grant Kekana assist from a corner — then was himself replaced immediately after scoring. Both late substitutions — Phili for Chiefs, Mailula for Sundowns — directly changed the match. A draw at FNB against the Brazilians is not a poor result for Da Cruz, but Chiefs' chance volume (4 shots, 33% possession) against the league's dominant side reveals the gap that still exists between them.

Sekhukhune United 2–0 Polokwane City

The Limpopo derby, and Sekhukhune made it look straightforward from the first whistle. Tshepo Mokoane struck early on 8 minutes, finishing a Givemore Khupe through ball to the bottom right corner. Ellis Rammala doubled the advantage on 20 minutes, converting a D'Angelo Kazeem assist to the bottom left. Two goals inside 20 minutes against a Rise and Shine side that came into this game in decent early-season form.

The stats reflect total Sekhukhune dominance: 5 shots on target to Polokwane's 0. Polokwane hit the woodwork once and had 7 shots, but none troubled the keeper. Tshepo Mokoane also struck the post in the 43rd minute, narrowly missing a third. For Cedric Kaze's side, three wins from three league matches is a remarkable start — and the performance level in this match was arguably their best of the campaign so far. 3W from 3 in the league. For Bayano Moloto's Polokwane, a first defeat of the season and their first blank sheet. The 0-from-7-shots-on-target stat is a brutal wake-up call.

AmaZulu FC 2–0 Siwelele FC

The xG number for AmaZulu — 2.18 from just 9 shots and 36% possession — tells you everything about the quality of their chances on the day. Arthur Zwane's side were clinical and devastating on the break. Mondli Mbanjwa opened on 20 minutes with a right-footed finish assisted by Thando Ngwenya on a fast break. Ngwenya then turned scorer 11 minutes later, meeting a Nkosikhona Radebe cross at the back post and heading home from close range — an 0.88 xG chance that was as good as they come.

Siwelele had 19 shots and 64% possession. They hit the AmaZulu keeper Wilfried Kouassi with six saves across the match — and still did not score. A performance that perfectly illustrates their early-season frustration: possession, territory, shots, and nothing to show for it. For Usuthu, two wins from three and an increasingly reliable goal threat from Ngwenya and Mbanjwa in combination is a very promising sign.

Durban City 1–1 Richards Bay

The xGOT number is the detail that stings most for Khalil Ben Youssef: Durban City registered 0.78 xG on target from 18 shots, while Richards Bay — with just 10 shots and 38% possession — registered an xGOT of 1.30. Nqaba Xulu gave Richards Bay the lead in the 9th minute with a right-footed strike to the top right corner that belied its 0.14 pre-shot xG. That goal held until the 69th minute, when Richards Bay's own defender Thembela Sikhakhane put the ball into his own net to level. Durban City had 18 shots and nine corners. They finally got their equaliser — as an own goal. Three matches in the league for Durban City: one loss, two draws, zero league goals scored by their own players. The goals simply have to come.

Milford FC 2–1 Kruger United

The match of the weekend. Menzi Chili was shown a straight red card on 40 minutes — before half-time, before a single goal had been scored, and before Milford had the opportunity to make any tactical adjustments at the interval. From that moment, Dr. Xanti Pupuma's side faced 50 minutes of football with 10 men against a side with everything to prove.

Khetukuthula Ndlovu — the same player who scored against Chiefs in MD1 — gave Kruger the lead on 51 minutes, finishing a Motsie Matima assist from outside the box. Milford, a man down, trailed 0-1. What followed was extraordinary. Sicelo Masilela, who had come on as a second-half substitute, headed home a Sifiso Mdluli cross on 68 minutes — equaliser. Then, on 76 minutes, Thabana Mabena — another substitute, introduced at 74 minutes — produced a left-footed strike from outside the box to the top right corner, assisted by Cebolenkosi Mthethwa. Two substitutes, two goals, 10 men, and a 2-1 Milford win. This is what promoted clubs are built on.

Chippa United 0–3 Orlando Pirates

A goalless first half, then three goals in 27 second-half minutes. Gamphani Lungu opened on 60 minutes with a right-footed strike to the top right corner, converting a Patrick Maswanganyi through ball. Lebone Seema made it two on 64 minutes — a header from the centre of the box off a Deon Hotto cross following a corner. Then substitute Daniel Msendami, introduced at 78 minutes, put the seal on it with a composed finish on 87.

For Abdeslam Ouaddou, this is the response he needed after dropping points at AmaZulu in MD2. A 3-0 win, a clean sheet, and three different goalscorers. The concern with Pirates' early-season stats — high possession, low shot conversion — is still there, but this was a more convincing performance than the previous two. The 3-0 scoreline flatters the margin slightly — a goalless first half with Chippa posing moments of danger — but the clinical second-half execution is exactly what champions produce. 7 points from 3 matches and the strongest performance of their early campaign.

TS Galaxy 0–0 Golden Arrows

Mpho Mvelase struck the left post on 30 minutes — the closest either side came to breaking the deadlock. Bernard Parker's TS Galaxy and Pitso Dladla's Golden Arrows played out a third consecutive goalless match for Galaxy in their home league fixtures this season. Arrows are now unbeaten in three league matches but without a goal in two. The shared point does neither side particular harm, but both will want significantly more from Matchday 4. Victor Letsoalo had two chances saved by Edward Maova in the second half, while Arrows' substitute-led pressing in the final 20 minutes also produced nothing.

The fixture that has been waiting since the opening weekend finally arrives. Mamelodi Sundowns host Marumo Gallants at Loftus Versfeld in the rescheduled Matchday 1 tie — postponed following the passing of Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams.

Sundowns arrive in decent form despite the emotional weight of the early weeks. Their MD2 comeback win at Mbombela — trailing TS Galaxy before Sphelele Mkhulise's brace in the final minutes — showed character. The MD3 draw at FNB against Chiefs, where Cassius Mailula came off the bench to head home an equaliser on 75 minutes, showed resilience. Two matches played, two matches unbeaten, and a game in hand over most of the division. Siyanda Ndlovu — the summer's most controversial transfer — has begun integrating into Miguel Cardoso's system, playing 20 minutes at FNB. If he starts at Loftus, it will be his full debut.

Gallants come into this fixture battered. A 3-1 hammering by Stellenbosch in MD3 — Quwan Plaatjies' hat-trick — followed a goalless MD2 draw against Kruger United in which Thendo Mukumela was sent off. Mukumela's suspension at the Athlone Stadium left Gallants defensively exposed in the wide areas, and Plaatjies exploited it mercilessly. Whether Mukumela is available for this fixture depends on the length of his ban — if he has served it, his return would be the most significant team news. Phuti Mohafe's side are yet to score in a home or away fixture they've controlled, and at Loftus against a full-strength Sundowns, the task looks formidable.

A Sundowns win would move them to 6 points from three matches, level with Sekhukhune and Milford — and very much back in the title conversation. A Gallants win would be one of the results of the season. The 17:30 kick-off means the Pretoria faithful get a Tuesday evening fixture under the Loftus lights.
