Sundowns are pulling away. Twenty points from eight matches. A midweek 3-0, a weekend draw they should have won. Chiefs have dropped points in two of their last three. Pirates have a game in hand and the best goal difference in the division. The race for the title is beginning to take shape — and Milford FC are making the loudest noise in the chasing pack. And in the result nobody expected, Kruger United finally won their first match of the season.
Mamelodi Sundowns 3–0 Siwelele FC
This was the most one-sided match of the season. Mamelodi Sundowns had 72% possession, 22 shots, 44 touches in the opposition box, and an xG of 3.11. Siwelele FC had four box touches and zero shots on target. Their xGOT was 0.00. The only question was why the scoreline was not heavier — Sundowns hit the woodwork twice and missed two big chances.
Kutlwano Letlhaku broke the deadlock on 58 minutes, a right-footed finish to the right side of the goal with an xG of 1.07 — a gilt-edged chance converted cleanly. Siyanda Ndlovu added the second on 79 minutes and Tashreeq Matthews, on for the last 24 minutes, scored with his first significant touch on 90+2 to make it three. Aubrey Modiba rated 8.0, Letlhaku 8.0. For Siwelele, their seventh match without a win and a defensive display that will concern Ernst Middendorp deeply. Sundowns: 17pts from 7 (midweek)
Stellenbosch FC 1–1 Sekhukhune United
Sekhukhune went ahead on 63 minutes through Bethuel Muzeu — a right-footed finish from close range with an xG of 0.62, a genuine chance taken well. Stellenbosch chased the game and Bradley Grobler rescued a point on 87 minutes with a right-footed strike from outside the box (xG 0.33). Stellenbosch had the better of the stats: 55% possession, 14 shots to six, and an xGOT of 1.60 to 1.53 in a match where both goalkeepers made three saves. Siviwe Nkwali was outstanding for Sekhukhune at 8.0, topping the ratings. A point each that leaves both clubs in the lower half of the table. Stellenbosch: 3 draws in last 4
AmaZulu FC 1–0 Marumo Gallants
Thando Ngwenya is unstoppable. A header on 37 minutes — xG 0.75, xGOT 0.99, converting cleanly from the right side of the six-yard box — takes him to seven league goals, five clear of the next group. That is the Golden Boot conversation over before October. Nkosikhona Radebe assisted with a cross and rated 7.8 as AmaZulu's best performer. Edgar Diala Manaka was sent off for Gallants on 77 minutes, reducing them to ten men for the final quarter and extinguishing any chance of a comeback.
AmaZulu also hit the woodwork once and had an xGOT of 1.15 — they controlled this match comfortably. Gallants had an xGOT of just 0.11 and one shot on target across 90 minutes. Four wins from six for AmaZulu, and they are now third in the table. AmaZulu: 13pts from 6 — 3rd Gallants: 4 losses from 6
Polokwane City 1–1 Kaizer Chiefs
Lebohang Maboe put Chiefs in front on 29 minutes from a fast break — a right-footed finish to the right side of the goal from an xG 0.50 chance, rated 8.4 on the day. Chiefs had 59% possession, an xG of 1.50 and an xGOT of 1.55 — clear enough dominance across 90 minutes. But goalkeeper Brandon Petersen inadvertently turned in a corner on 73 minutes for an own goal — one of those moments the numbers cannot anticipate. Oscarine Masuluke made four saves to keep Polokwane in it. Chiefs pressed for a winner and could not find it.
This is the second consecutive match Chiefs have dropped points after leading. Their xGOT of 1.55 is the highest of any team in a losing or drawing position this matchday — they are creating but not converting when it matters. Fernando da Cruz will not be satisfied. Three draws in six matches for a side that came into this season with title ambitions. Chiefs: 12pts — 2nd consecutive draw
Chippa United 1–1 Mamelodi Sundowns
Twenty-one shots, 34 box touches, an xGOT of 1.91, and a 90+5 equaliser after conceding from a six-shot attack. That is the Sundowns story at Buffalo City Stadium. Stanley Nwabili made six saves and rated 8.0 — one of the performances of the matchday. Sirgio Kammies came on in the 75th minute and scored three minutes later: a right-footed finish from close range, xG 0.15, the kind of goal that should not have happened given Sundowns' defensive organisation.
Antonio Van Wyk — on as a substitute from the 72nd minute — equalised in the fifth minute of stoppage time with a left-footed finish, xG 0.17. A point rescued rather than deserved in the final analysis, but the statistics make clear Sundowns were the superior side by every measure. Miguel Cardoso will be frustrated by the dropped point; the finishing remains inconsistent. Khulumani Ndamane rated 8.0 as Sundowns' best outfield performer. Milford FC 5–1 Richards Bay
The result of the matchday. Lindokuhle Zikhali gave Richards Bay the lead on 24 minutes, then was sent off in the same passage of play — an extraordinary sequence that handed Milford both a penalty and a numerical advantage. Siphosethu Ndlabi converted the penalty on 28 minutes and was the match's best player: one goal, one assist, an 8.9 rating. Mvelo Zikakayo added goals on 45+1 and 54 to put Milford firmly in control, rated 8.7 with two goals from an xG of 0.69.
Phakamani Jwara came on with 14 minutes remaining and scored immediately on 84 minutes, assisted by Mjabulise Mkhize. Jabulile Gxakoshe — on from 62 minutes — wrapped up a remarkable afternoon on 90+2, one goal and one assist for a 8.4 rating. Richards Bay's xGOT of 1.17 shows they were genuinely threatening before the red card, but what followed was a rout. Milford are now fifth in the table on 11 points from seven matches. Dr. Xanti Pupuma's promoted side is proving to be a genuine top-half team. Milford: 11pts — Best MD in the season
Siwelele FC 1–1 Golden Arrows
Philani Khumalo put Golden Arrows ahead on 49 minutes. Christian Saile equalised for Siwelele on 61 with a left-footed finish from close range (xG 0.60), assisted by the pressure from Tebogo Potsane. Arrows had the better numbers — xGOT 1.36 to 0.90 — and probably deserved the three points. Siwelele's Philani Khumalo rated 7.8 as the match's best player. A point for both, but Siwelele remain in real danger at the bottom. Arrows also deserve more from their performances — four draws, one win in six matches. Siwelele: 3pts from 7 — Bottom three
TS Galaxy FC 0–1 Kruger United
Nobody saw this coming. Kruger United — one point, four losses, a goal difference of minus-nine coming into Sunday — walked away from Solomon Mahlangu Stadium with their first win of the season, and they deserved it. Veluyeke Zulu was sent off for Galaxy on 50 minutes, reducing them to ten men for the final 40. Khetukuthula Ndlovu — on at half-time — struck on 73 minutes with a left-footed finish from the right side of the box, Mlungisi Zwane providing the assist. xG 0.51, xGOT 0.82: a genuine, hard-earned goal from a side that has been searching for one all season.
Kruger were the better team even before the red card: higher xG (1.46 to 0.85), more shots (14 to 11), more box touches (20 to 16). The match reflected a Kruger side that has been unlucky in its results even as it has struggled. For Galaxy, the third match without a win and a red card that undone whatever tactical plan Shaun Bartlett had set. Victor Letsoalo had three touches in the box across 90 minutes and registered an xG of just 0.08 — the Golden Boot leader is going through a dry spell. Kruger: First Win — 4pts from 6 Galaxy: 3 without a win
